What happens the moment you upload
Behind a single click, SewFlow runs the same chain of decisions a professional digitizer would make by hand — only in seconds, and without you lifting a finger. Here's each step, and why it matters.
Smart color detection
Every upload is scanned with a clustering algorithm (k-means) that finds the distinct colors in your artwork, separates them into individual thread layers, and maps each one to a real 34-color embroidery thread palette. The background is detected and lifted out automatically with a flood-fill, so your subject sits clean on the hoop.
Color separation is the slowest, fiddliest part of traditional digitizing. Here it happens the instant your image loads — no manual tracing of each shade.
AI optimization
Photos and busy graphics rarely stitch well as-is. The built-in Embroidery-Ready Enhancer uses AI to redraw your image with a limited palette, hard clean edges, and no dithering, gradients, or speckles — while carefully preserving the subject. The result looks like artwork that was drawn for thread.
Beginners upload phone photos and screenshots. The enhancer quietly converts that into something a machine can actually sew cleanly.
Intelligent stitch-type selection
SewFlow looks at every individual shape and decides how it should be stitched. Genuinely narrow parts — thin lines, small lettering — get smooth satin columns, while larger areas are filled with tatami. A built-in off-axis guard keeps diagonal letters and script fonts crisp instead of banded.
Choosing satin vs. fill per region is exactly what an expert does manually. SewFlow makes that call automatically, shape by shape.
Automatic underlay generation
Before the visible stitches go down, SewFlow lays a foundation pass running perpendicular to the top fill. It's eroded slightly inward so it hides under the finished edge, and thin shapes skip it entirely so they don't bunch up.
Underlay is invisible in the final design but it's what stops fabric from puckering and gaps from showing. You get it without ever knowing it's there.
Hidden travel-path optimization
Where the needle needs to move between areas of the same color, SewFlow reroutes those moves as tiny stitches tucked underneath a shape's own fill instead of leaving loose jumps across the surface — while still keeping genuine jumps between separate shapes.
Fewer jumps means fewer thread trims, fewer loose threads on the back, and a tidier, more professional finish straight off the machine.
Stitch-path optimization
The order in which regions and sub-paths are stitched is solved with a weighted cost model that strongly penalizes long visible jumps and minimizes total travel — then every emitted segment is re-validated so disjoint shapes still break cleanly where they should.
A smart stitch order means a faster, cleaner run with the thread going where you'd want it, not zig-zagging all over the hoop.
Corner & edge softening
Outlines and fill boundaries are simplified and resampled before stitching, so sharp, jagged pixel corners become smooth, evenly-spaced stitch points. Tiny sub-millimeter stitches that would jam a machine or snap thread are filtered out automatically.
Raw images are full of jagged edges and stray pixels. Smoothing and cleaning them is what separates a homemade-looking stitch-out from a polished one.
Paint, erase, recolor & auto border
When you do want control, the touch-up tools stay just as easy: paint or erase stray stitches by hand, recolor any thread with one click, lift whole areas out of the design, or add a clean satin finishing border around a patch — all visually, on a live preview.
You fix things by looking at them, not by re-learning digitizing. And your edits are preserved even when you recolor afterwards.
