Originally developed by Tajima for their commercial embroidery machines, DST is now read by virtually every multi-head commercial machine and most domestic machines as a secondary format. DST Format Limitations

DST files don't store thread colour information — they only contain stitch positions and jump/trim/stop commands. Colour changes are indicated by a stop command, and the operator assigns thread colours at the machine. If you're sending a DST file to a commercial embroiderer, include a separate colour sequence sheet noting which thread colour goes in which position.

Sending DST Files to a Commercial Embroiderer

• •Send the DST file plus a reference image (JPEG) showing colours and placement.
• •Include a thread colour list — e.g. 'Stop 1: Red (Madeira 1147), Stop 2: White (Madeira 9001)'.
• •Specify the finished design size in millimetres.
