How to Convert a PSD (Photoshop) File to Embroidery Free Online

Designed your artwork in Photoshop? Here's how to take a PSD file and convert it into a ready-to-stitch embroidery file for free.

Photoshop's PSD format keeps your design in editable layers, which is perfect for artwork but not something an embroidery machine can read. To stitch a PSD design you first export a flat image, then digitize that image into a stitch file. SewFlow handles the digitizing step for free in your browser.

Step 1: Flatten and Export Your PSD

    1. 1Open your design in Photoshop and hide any layers you don't want stitched.
    2. 2Choose File → Export → Export As, and pick PNG for the cleanest edges.
    3. 3Export at a high resolution (at least 1000 px on the longest side) so small details survive.
    4. 4If your design has a background you want removed, export with transparency enabled.

Step 2: Digitize the Image with SewFlow

    1. 1Go to sewflow.com/image and upload your exported PNG.
    2. 2Remove the background if needed and adjust thread colours.
    3. 3Set the hoop size to match your machine.
    4. 4Choose JEF, DST, PES, EXP, XXX, or SEW and download.

    Simplify Before Exporting

Photoshop artwork often uses gradients and dozens of colours. Flatten gradients into a few solid colours before exporting — embroidery reads best with 3 to 6 distinct colours.
