If you have ever stitched a design that puckered, shifted, or sank into the fabric, the culprit was almost always missing or poor underlay. Underlay is the foundation pass — stitching laid down before the visible top thread — and it is the clearest line between professional digitizing and amateur output. SewFlow builds this foundation automatically by default, so you get the benefit without any manual setup.
What Underlay Actually Does

SewFlow's Two-Stage Automatic Underlay
Most basic digitizers either skip underlay entirely or apply a single generic pass. SewFlow uses a layered foundation that mirrors what a professional digitizer would do by hand.
Stage one: the inset edge run
First, SewFlow traces a single line of running stitch just inside the outline of each shape. Because it sits slightly inset from the finished edge, it tacks the border down before anything else is stitched. This is sewn first precisely so the dense top fill cannot pull the fabric edge ragged later.
Stage two: perpendicular tatami underlay
Next, SewFlow lays a coarse, open fill running perpendicular to the direction of the final top fill. Crossing the top fill at an angle is what gives the design its structural stability — the two layers brace each other like the grain in plywood. The underlay is eroded slightly inward so it tucks completely under the finished edge and never peeks out.

If the underlay ran in the same direction as the top fill, the needle would drop into the same channels twice and the foundation would do little to stabilize the fabric. By running across the top fill, the underlay grips the fabric in the opposite axis, dramatically reducing push and pull distortion. This single detail is something many cheap auto-digitizers get wrong.
Thin Shapes Are Handled Intelligently
Underlay is not always appropriate. Very thin strokes — the stem of a letter, a fine line in a logo — would be ruined by a foundation pass underneath them. SewFlow detects this: when a shape is too narrow, the underlay erodes to nothing and is simply omitted, so fine details stay sharp.
Anti-Puckering by Default
SewFlow's underlay is on by default because it is the right choice for the vast majority of designs. The result is embroidery that lies flat straight out of the hoop, with crisp edges and even coverage.
