JEF — Janome Embroidery Format

JEF was developed by Janome and is the primary format for their home and semi-professional machines. It stores stitch coordinates, color change commands, and some color metadata. JEF files are read by Janome Memory Craft machines, Janome Horizon, and many Elna models that share Janome's platform.

DST — Data Stitch Tajima

DST is the oldest and most universal embroidery format. Originally developed by Tajima for their industrial machines, it uses relative stitch coordinates and does not store color information. This makes DST perfect for commercial production where operators assign thread colors manually. If you're unsure which format to use, DST is the safest choice for commercial shops.

PES — Brother Embroidery Format

PES is Brother's native format and is used by the entire Brother and Babylock embroidery machine range. PES files can embed color suggestions that prompt the machine to ask for a color change at the right moment, making stitching more guided than DST. PES is the format to choose for any Brother PE-series, Innov-ís, or Babylock machine.
