Why Corners Are Hard

At a sharp corner, many stitches converge on a small area. If the digitizer is not careful, thread piles up and the point becomes a lumpy blob instead of a crisp angle. At a saddle point — where two parts of a shape touch only at a single diagonal — a naive algorithm will happily bridge them into one blob, destroying the intended design.

SewFlow's Contour Tracing

SewFlow follows the true outline of every shape using a precise edge-walk that turns consistently around each pixel. When it reaches a diagonal touch point, it resolves the ambiguity by taking the sharpest turn, so two lobes that merely touch at a corner stay separate rather than merging. The traced outline is then simplified and smoothed so the path is clean without losing the shape's character.

The Inset Edge Run

Around each shape, SewFlow runs a single line of stitching set slightly inside the finished edge. This edge run is sewn before the dense fill, so it tacks the border down and keeps it from being pulled ragged when the fill goes in. Because it is inset, it never pokes out past the finished edge — it just keeps the border crisp.

Fine Details Fall Away Cleanly

Not every line can be stitched. A stroke thinner than thread simply cannot be reproduced, and forcing it produces a mess. SewFlow erodes each shape slightly when planning the edge run, so strokes that are too thin to stitch — the finest lines in a logo, tiny serifs in text — fall away cleanly instead of becoming ragged outlines. The details that can be stitched stay crisp; the ones that cannot are dropped gracefully.
