Stitch density refers to how close together the rows of stitches are in an embroidery fill. It's usually measured as the distance between rows in millimetres. Get density right and your design looks full, smooth, and professional. Get it wrong and the result is either gappy and thin or stiff and raised.
How Stitch Density Is Measured
Density is typically expressed as the distance between rows in millimetres. A density of 0.4 mm means rows are 0.4 mm apart. Some software expresses this inversely — as stitches per centimetre. The standard density for most embroidery on woven fabric is 0.35–0.45 mm between rows.
What Happens When Density Is Too Low
- •Fabric shows through between stitch rows — the design looks sparse and unfinished.
- •Colours appear faded or washed out because the backing fabric shows through.
- •Particularly noticeable on dark thread on light fabric, or in bright colours.
- •Common cause: digitizing software set to a very light density by default.
What Happens When Density Is Too High
- •The design becomes stiff, raised, and boardy — almost like a hard pad on the fabric.
- •The needle must penetrate many existing threads, causing excessive wear and thread breaks.
