    How to Hoop Fabric for Embroidery — Step-by-Step Guide

    Proper hooping is the foundation of good embroidery. This step-by-step guide shows you how to hoop every fabric type correctly for clean, distortion-free results.

    Hooping is the process of clamping your fabric between two rings so it's held firmly and flat while the machine stitches. If done correctly, your fabric stays perfectly still and your design comes out exactly where you planned it. Done incorrectly, the fabric shifts, the design distorts, and hoop marks appear. This guide shows you how to do it right.

    Understanding Your Hoop

    A standard embroidery hoop has two parts: an inner ring (with no hardware) and an outer ring (with a screw clamp). The fabric goes between these rings, with the inner ring inside the outer ring, clamping the fabric flat. The screw adjusts the tension of the outer ring.

    Choosing the Right Hoop Size

    Always use the smallest hoop that comfortably fits your design plus at least 10–15 mm of border around it. Larger hoops give the fabric more movement opportunity — a tighter hoop around the design area gives better control.

    Standard Hooping Step-by-Step

    1. 1Loosen the outer hoop screw until the two rings separate easily.
    2. 2Place the inner ring on a flat surface.
    3. 3Lay your stabilizer flat over the inner ring.
    4. 4Lay your fabric on top of the stabilizer, centred over the inner ring.
    5. 5Press the outer ring down over both layers, trapping the fabric and stabilizer between the rings.
    6. 6Tighten the screw until the fabric is firm but not over-stretched. The fabric should be taut, like a drum, without pulling or distorting.
    7. 7Check that the design area is centred in the hoop.
    8. 8Attach the hoop to the machine according to your machine's instructions.

    Centring Your Design in the Hoop

    Most embroidery machines have a 'trace' function that moves the needle around the perimeter of the design without stitching. Use this to verify your design placement before starting. If the needle travels outside your intended placement area, adjust the hoop or re-hoop the fabric.

    Hooping Knit and Stretchy Fabrics

    • Never stretch knit fabric when hooping — hoop it in its relaxed state. Stretching distorts the design when the fabric recovers.
    • Use cutaway stabilizer as backing for all knit and jersey fabrics.
    • For very stretchy fabrics, use an adhesive stabilizer (floating method) instead of direct hooping.
    • Lay the fabric flat on the stabilizer without pulling.

    Avoiding Hoop Marks

    Hoop marks (ring-shaped impressions in the fabric) are a common problem with delicate or pile fabrics:

    • Wrap the inner ring with cloth medical tape — this cushions the fabric and prevents marks.
    • For fleece and velvet: use the floating method instead of direct hooping.
    • Steam hoop marks out with a garment steamer held 5–10 cm from the surface.
    • Don't hoop too tightly — just firm enough for the fabric to be taut.

    The Floating Method (For Items You Can't Hoop Directly)

    Some items can't be hooped directly: finished garments with seams in the way, very thick items, very small items, or delicate fabrics that hoop-mark easily. The floating method solves all of these:

    1. 1Hoop only the stabilizer (cutaway or sticky stabilizer).
    2. 2Apply temporary spray adhesive to the stabilizer surface.
    3. 3Press your fabric onto the adhesive surface, positioning it precisely.
    4. 4Place a WSS topping on top if working with pile fabric.
    5. 5Stitch as normal. Remove the fabric from the stabilizer by peeling gently after stitching.

    Time-Saving Tip

    Mark the centre point of your design on the fabric with a water-soluble marking pen before hooping. When you attach the hoop to the machine, use the needle-down function to lower the needle to your marked centre, then use the machine's design-centering function to align.
