Resizing an embroidery design sounds simple, but it comes with a catch: when you scale a stitch file up or down, the number of stitches stays the same while the distance between them changes. Scale up too much and you get sparse, gappy stitching. Scale down too much and stitches pile on top of each other, causing thread breaks and needle jams.
The Safe Resize Range
Most embroidery software and machines allow safe resizing within ±20% of the original design size. Beyond that, you should re-digitize from scratch (or use SewFlow to re-convert the original image at the new size) rather than scaling the stitch file.
How to Resize When Converting with SewFlow
When you convert an image with SewFlow, you set the target design size before the stitch data is generated — not after. This means SewFlow calculates stitch spacing, row density, and jump distances based on your chosen dimensions. What About Text and Fonts?
For text designs, very small sizes (below 5 mm letter height) cause legibility issues — stitches can't form clean letterforms at tiny scales. Use SewFlow's text converter and set a minimum letter height of 6–8 mm for readable results.
Always Test on Scrap
After resizing any design, always stitch a test on scrap fabric. Density issues, short stitches, and jump-thread problems show up immediately on a test run and can be fixed before you commit to the final garment.
