    Stitch Path Optimization: The Digitizer Hierarchy Behind SewFlow

    Great embroidery is not just about where stitches go — it is about the order they go down in. SewFlow plans that order with a professional digitizer's hierarchy, automatically.

    Ask a professional digitizer what separates a great stitch file from a mediocre one and many will say the same thing: sequencing. The order in which the machine sews each part of a design determines how flat it lies, how clean the route is, and how much thread it wastes. SewFlow plans this sequence using a deliberate hierarchy — the same way an experienced digitizer thinks — and it does it automatically.

    Foundation Before Finish

    The first principle of good sequencing is that foundation comes before finish. With underlay enabled (the default), SewFlow sews in the order edge run, then tatami underlay, then top fill. The edge run tacks the border, the underlay stabilizes the fabric across the opposite axis, and only then does the visible fill go down onto a smooth, anchored bed. Getting this order wrong is one of the most common reasons cheap designs pucker.

    Routing by Cost, Not Just Distance

    Within a color, SewFlow decides the order to stitch each region using a weighted cost model rather than simply hopping to the nearest shape. It treats a visible jump as far more costly than short travel that can be hidden under the fill. As a result, it prefers an order and orientation where each move is either a direct continuation or a short hideable hop — even if a different order would be a hair shorter in raw distance but require an ugly visible jump.

    Raw travel distance is only used as a final tiebreaker, after jumps and hideable travel have been accounted for. This mirrors how a human digitizer prioritizes: clean route first, short route second.

    Safe by Construction

    Clever sequencing could be risky if it caused the needle to travel across bare fabric. SewFlow avoids this because every emitted move is re-validated against the actual stitched area. The sequencing only biases the route toward hideable hops; it can never force a visible strand across a gap, so genuinely separate shapes always keep a real, tied-off jump between them.

    Why This Matters

    • Designs lie flatter because foundation is always sewn before fill.
    • Backs are cleaner because the route favors hidden travel over visible jumps.
    • Stitch-outs are faster because the machine trims and repositions less often.
    • You get all of it without planning a single path yourself.

    Sequencing You Never See

    Good sequencing is invisible in the final design — you only notice its absence, in puckering, messy backs, and slow stitch-outs. SewFlow handles it so you never have to think about it.
