    Tatami Fill Stitches Explained (and How SewFlow Eliminates Tram Lines)

    Tatami fill — sometimes called ceeding or complex fill — is the stitch type that covers the large, solid areas of an embroidery design. It is used everywhere: the body of a letter, the panel of a logo, the background of a patch. Done well, it reads as a smooth, even sheet of color. Done badly, it is streaked with faint lines that catch the light and instantly mark a design as amateur. Here is how it works and how SewFlow keeps every fill clean.

    How a Tatami Fill Is Built

    A tatami fill covers a region with parallel rows of stitching, spaced a fraction of a millimeter apart. Each row is made of individual stitches, and the needle penetrates the fabric at regular intervals along each row. Spacing the rows correctly controls density: too open and the fabric shows through, too dense and the design becomes stiff and the fabric puckers.

    The Tram-Line Problem

    Here is the trap that cheap digitizers fall into. If every needle penetration is placed on a perfect grid — directly above the one in the row before — the holes line up into continuous channels running through the fill. These faint channels are called tram lines, and once you notice them you cannot unsee them. They break up what should be a smooth surface.

    It Is Always On — No Setting to Get Wrong

    Some software offers staggered fills as an advanced option buried in a menu, which means beginners never find it.
