How Embroidery Thread Colors Work
Machine embroidery thread is available in thousands of colors from brands like Madeira, Isacord, Robison-Anton, and Sulky. Each brand has its own color numbering system. Thread colors are physical materials — they can never exactly match a digital color, but you can get very close with careful matching.
Matching Brand Colors to Thread
- 1Identify your brand colors in Pantone (PMS) codes if possible — this is the most precise way to specify color.
- 2Use a Pantone-to-thread conversion chart (Madeira, Isacord, and Robison-Anton all publish these) to find the closest thread color number.
- 3Order sample spools of the closest colors and do physical stitch-out comparisons.
- 4Select the best matching thread under the same lighting conditions the final product will be viewed in.
- 5Document the thread color numbers for consistent reorders.
