Working with compressed images
JPG compression adds faint artifacts along edges, so SewFlow merges near-identical colours to smooth them out before tracing stitch regions. Solid, high-contrast artwork converts best; busy photos benefit from tight cropping.
JPG preparation tips
- Crop tightly around the subject and prefer high-contrast artwork; if you can re-export the original, PNG avoids compression artifacts entirely.
- Use the highest-quality original available to reduce blocky compression around edges.
- Simplify gradients, shadows, and details that are smaller than the intended stitch size.
- Check the live preview for unwanted background regions before saving.
Frequently asked questions
Do JPG compression artifacts affect the stitches?
SewFlow's colour merging absorbs typical JPG artifacts by pooling near-identical shades into one thread, so normal-quality JPGs convert cleanly. Heavily compressed images can still produce speckled regions — the automatic cleanup pass removes most of them.
Can I turn JPG into PES, JEF, or DST?
Yes. Upload the JPG, then select PES, JEF, DST, EXP, XXX, or SEW from the format controls.
Does JPG preserve every image detail?
No image format can preserve every pixel in embroidery. The artwork is simplified into stitchable thread-colour regions and tiny machine-unsafe details are removed.
Is JPG conversion free?
Creating, previewing, and saving the design is free. Downloading the machine file requires a paid plan or bonus credit.
